THE YAAN : RALEIGH is one of the small villages in the Bellingen Shire. Right next to Repton , another small village. I live in Raleigh. It has a fine history and once BOOMED with timber and corn and dairy cattle. Things have changed a lot. Raleigh was once on the Pacific Highway but a motorway now bypasses it and bicycles race along the old Highway. There was a NORCO dairy cooperative factory on the banks of the river. Its still there but a New Zealand company runs it and things have changed.Raleigh is a quiet place and a beautiful one on the river. I almost opened a shop there, a decade or so back when the Truck Stop closed down. We have horses and cattle and an International Raceway just up the road. We asked about renting McBaron’s old silo the other day and the New Zealand company gave us the nod. Me – I like sitting here. I taught at the school a while back and a railway track runs right across the road. Further round on Yellow Rock Road is the Yellow Rock in the River. Good country it is.
